American Staffordshire Terrier - Ellie - Medium - Adult - Female
Ellie is one of the most wonderful dogs we have in the shelter. She is 100% trustworthy with children, seniors, and adults alike, and a special bonus- she seriously resembles a pot belled pig! Ellie does well with other dogs, she even licked one of the other dogs through the cage doors the other day, but she becomes jealous when other dogs take the attention from her, therefore, she would like, and let's face it, 100% deserves to be, an only dog in a household. Quite simply, she just doesn't want to share her parent's attention. Luckily for her, she is one of those dogs that once you have her, you wouldn't feel a need for a second dog. She is all you could ever need/hope for in a dog owner. This does not mean that she CANT share a home with a dog, she certainly can walk by them and play with them in the street without a problem. But when you are on the couch and she wants all the love she has been without, she doesn't want to share it. That's understandable, don't you think? We know this because a wonderful family took her home and just couldn't get her to want to share the human love with the resident dog, so they had to give her back. Although this is unfortunate, we now know how Ellie does in a residence. Her former adopters sent us this: "Ellie does very well on rides in the car. She's a silly pup who loves to be close to her people, and she does well with children. I've been in the elevator with her where a child has unexpectedly pet her somewhat hard and she was fine. She loves to spend time on the couch or in bed with her people, and she loves to be loved in return. However, she seems to need all of that attention for herself, which is why we believe she needs to be the one and only love for someone. She will have her favorite blankets and chew toys, a leash, and her Kong toy that lets out little bits of kibble if she moves it just right (which she has become pretty good at). "She does well when she doesn't have to be crated for half of the day. We think that if she could be in a one-dog home where she has to be crated only when someone leaves or goes to bed, she'll do well. "She does well with certain commands, such as leave it, sit, stay, wait, off and down. She loves to make a little fort out of pillows by burrowing under them on the couch, and she loves to roll around for no apparent reason, which is super cute. She really is just a super funny and cute dog who never disappoints when you need a laugh. And from the way that she acts, you can tell that she doesnt know that she has a chronic liver condition. She takes her medicines easily in her food, or even out of your hands, as if it were a treat. "We think she deserves her own home where she can be the center of attention for the remainder of her life, and she will shower her caretakers with affection and laughs. We just can't be that long-term home for her." Can you ask for more? Poor Ellie has had some sad medical conditions. Now that we know what they are, they are completely under control thankful to a great donor who allowed us to do extensive testing! We found out that Ellie is allergic to chicken, soybean, sweet potato, turkey, white potato, salmon, and poultry mix. We feed her lamb and rice and that works fine :) She also has micro vascular displasia. Basically this means she has tiny shunts throughout her liver- nothing to do for this- non operable but needs lifetime medication. She also has irritable bowel disease so she is on a medication for this as well. With the medication she gets daily at the shelter (and takes like a champ with no problem at all!) her conditions are completely under control and not at all contagious. She is fully ready for a home! A while ago she had a bit of mersa but she doesn't have this anymore. She should get monthly medicated baths just to keep this at bay. PLEASE COME TO THE SHELTER TO MEET ELLIE. SHE IS WAITING FOR HER FOREVER HOME. **This pet is Pets for Patriots eligible, which entitles military professionals and veterans to discounted medical care for the life of this pet through partner veterinarians.**
